How It Came Together
Campfire Light First, Then the Stars, All Before a 10pm Curfew
The resort has a 10pm quiet time, which I read as protecting the dark skies it's built around. That meant the proposal and every photo had to happen and wrap before 10. Since Rishi also wanted enough light on their faces to capture the moment, we landed on a plan: campfire first, for light, then move into the stars once it was fully dark.
My husband and I hid in the bushes behind their dome while they were at dinner, close enough to see in through the dome's open windows once they got back, and hoping the dark would keep us hidden from Manasi too.
The Weather Had Other Plans
They got back from dinner, opened the dome's windows wide, and I watched them dance to some music Rishi put on. An employee came by and lit the fire pit, so I checked in: did they want to head outside for s'mores? They did, though by then it had turned windy and stormy enough that the stars weren't visible at all.
They roasted s'mores anyway, took a few photos for themselves, and at one point Manasi spotted movement in the bushes, quite possibly us, and had a solid minute of panic before they went back inside to regroup. When they came back out, the fire had gone out too, so they called the employee back to relight it a second time.
The Proposal
With the fire going again, Manasi settled in to keep making s'mores. Rishi started talking about the stars, about how beautiful they'd be if the clouds would just clear, and then pulled out the ring, lit from inside its box. His line was something like, "here's my favorite star," and he opened it and showed her.
She was completely surprised, just the reaction he was hoping for. Then he pointed us out and told her who we were: the photographer he'd hired to document the proposal, and sorry for scaring her earlier. She took it well. We apologized properly and got to work on photos, mostly flash and firelight since it was fully dark by then, some by the fire and some using the light spilling out of their dome.
The one shot we didn't get was the one Rishi had talked about most: a long exposure of the two of them with the actual stars behind them. The clouds never broke. We were both a little disappointed by that, but the photos of the two of them together, lit by fire and dome-light, told the story anyway. Once we had what we needed, we headed out and let them keep their evening.
