If you're flying in and don't want to burn half your trip driving, Salt Lake City is your easy button. Mountain overlooks, a boardwalk lake at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, and salt flats that feel like the surface of the moon: all within about 45 minutes of the airport. I've photographed proposals at the Great Saltair and at Silver Lake in Brighton, and both let you pull off a total surprise without a two-hour logistics puzzle.

Permits & Logistics for Your Salt Lake City Proposal

There's no park permit process to plan around here: the Great Saltair, Silver Lake, and most city or private-venue proposal spots around Salt Lake sit outside any national park boundary. That's part of why this is such a good option for out-of-state couples on a tight timeline: no Special Use Permit, no application lead time.

What you do want to think about is the venue itself. The Great Saltair sits near the southern end of the Great Salt Lake, about 20 to 30 minutes from downtown, and it can get muddy close to the water line, so plan footwear accordingly or propose slightly further back where it's firmer. Silver Lake, up Big Cottonwood Canyon about 35 to 45 minutes away, has a paved boardwalk that's fine for heels and is only open from late May through October. Once you're ready to plan the actual wedding, Utah issues marriage licenses through the county clerk with no waiting period, so the legal side moves as fast as you're ready to.

How far is Silver Lake from Salt Lake City?

About 35–45 minutes via Big Cottonwood Canyon Road. Pack for the elevation: Silver Lake sits at roughly 8,700 feet, which typically runs 15–20 degrees cooler than the valley floor even in summer, so if the forecast in Salt Lake looks warm, bring a layer for the mountain.
