Zion gives you a scale you can't get anywhere else in Utah: 2,000-foot sandstone walls rising straight up from the canyon floor, the Virgin River threading through the bottom, hanging gardens clinging to the cliffs. I haven't shot a dedicated proposal session inside Zion yet, so the gallery below uses a representative red-rock desert image from a nearby southern Utah shoot rather than photos I don't have from this location. The permit information, logistics, and planning advice on this page are specific to Zion either way.

Permits & Logistics for Your Zion Proposal

Good news for anyone proposing (not marrying) at Zion: a standard proposal (no officiant, no ceremony, just the two of you and a ring) doesn't require any special permit. That requirement only kicks in for an actual wedding or vow ceremony inside the park, which is a common point of confusion worth clearing up up front.

If you already know you'll want to come back and marry here, Zion's Special Use Wedding Permit application fee is $100, and it needs to be submitted at least three weeks before your date. Depending on the location and complexity of the ceremony, an additional monitoring fee of $50 per hour may apply. Ceremonies are only allowed at six designated sites: Temple of Sinawava, Menu Falls, Zion Lodge Lawn, Nature Center North Lawn, South Campground Amphitheater, and Timber Creek Overlook. Group size is capped at 100 people park-wide, with some individual sites holding fewer. On top of any permit, every vehicle entering the park pays the standard $35 park entry fee.

For your proposal, none of that applies: we just need to plan around park entry and pick a spot with the light and privacy you want.

The image above is from a Coral Pink Sand Dunes shoot near Kanab (a different southern Utah location with a similar red-desert look), and it's clearly labeled rather than presented as Zion. If a dramatic red-rock canyon proposal in this style is what you're picturing, that's the kind of session I can plan for you here; I just don't want to show you photos from somewhere else and call them Zion's. Frequently Asked Questions About Zion Proposals

Do you need a permit to propose at Zion National Park?

No, that requirement is only for an actual wedding or vow ceremony inside the park, not a standard proposal. One rule worth knowing either way: drones are banned across every unit of the National Park System, Zion included, so if you pictured an aerial shot of the canyon walls, we’ll get that same scale from the canyon floor instead.

How much does a Zion proposal photographer cost?

Utah proposal photography starts at $845 for a proposal within about an hour of the Wasatch Front, and Zion is well outside that range, so travel is built into your quote. That’s separate from the park’s own ceremony permit fee, which only applies if you’re planning an actual wedding rather than a proposal. I’ll work out your exact photography number with you on the planning call before you book anything.

How much does a wedding ceremony permit cost at Zion, in case we want to marry here later?

That’s the fee for the permit itself. The bigger planning wrinkle is getting everyone there. From early March through late November, Zion Canyon Scenic Drive is closed to private vehicles entirely, so reaching sites like Zion Lodge Lawn or Temple of Sinawava means riding the park shuttle both ways. Build that into your ceremony-day timeline, especially if you’re bringing guests or gear.

Where are you allowed to hold a ceremony at Zion?

Six designated sites, and worth knowing: because Zion Canyon’s walls run so high, several of them lose direct sunlight earlier in the day than you’d expect. Temple of Sinawava sits deep enough in the canyon that it’s shaded much of the afternoon, which can be a plus if you’re marrying in July. Is Zion a good place to propose?

Yes. One trail that’s off the table without extra planning: Angels Landing now requires its own separate permit through a recreation.gov lottery, unrelated to any ceremony permit. If that chained ridgeline is the shot you had in mind, we need to enter that lottery months ahead. Plenty of other trails, like the paved Riverside Walk or the more moderate Emerald Pools, work beautifully with zero lottery involved.

Can you keep a Zion proposal a surprise?

Yes, the same approach I use everywhere else. I scout the trail or viewpoint ahead of time, blend in like just another hiker with a camera, and shoot from a distance so she has no idea until you’re already down on one knee.
