Quick answer: it depends on where you stand: a ceremony inside Snow Canyon State Park requires a Utah State Parks wedding permit, while plenty of surrounding BLM land and desert outside the park boundary doesn't need any permit at all. Here's how Lia and Danny's St. George elopement fit into that.
St. George gives you the red-and-white sandstone Utah is famous for, without the long drive to Moab or the crowds of the bigger national parks, and its mild winters make it one of the few places in the state where a red-rock elopement is realistic well outside the busy spring-through-fall window. Lia and Danny got married right here, exchanging vows along the water with the desert lit up gold behind them, and it's the kind of unhurried, just-us ceremony this area is built for.
Permits & Logistics for Your St. George Elopement
Snow Canyon State Park: because an elopement is an actual ceremony (not just a proposal), Snow Canyon requires its own Utah State Parks wedding/event permit for an organized ceremony. Fee schedules can change, so rather than quote you a number I can't verify, I'll confirm the current requirement directly with the park before your date.
Outside the state park: plenty of St. George-area desert doesn't require any permit at all, which gives us plenty of flexibility on both location and timing if the state park's process doesn't fit your date.
Marriage license: issued statewide by any Utah county clerk, no waiting period: grab yours right in St. George, or in Salt Lake City on your way down. It's valid for 32 days once issued.

Documented photos from two St. George elopements: Lia and Danny's riverside ceremony, and Kim and Cody's red rock session out toward the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area. I'll keep adding to it as I book more couples in this exact spot.
